Small Group Leaders' Resources
“Community matters. That’s about like saying oxygen matters.
As our lungs require air, so our souls require what only community provides.
We were designed by our Trinitarian God (who is himself a group of three persons in profound relationship with each
other) to live in relationship. Without it, we die. It’s that simple. Without community where we know, explore,
discover, and touch one another, we experience isolation and despair that drive us in wrong directions, that corrupt
our efforts to live meaningfully and to love well.” (The Connecting Church, by Randy Frazee. Taken from the forward
written by Larry Crabb, page 13.)
From this text, it is clear that loving God and loving each other should be at the top of our “To Do” lists.
How can we learn to love God and each other better? I think a great way is by building committed friendships
with others each week in one of our small groups.
“When it comes to our health, our education, or the forging of personal relationships, we are so often in a
hurry to get to where we want to end up that we take shortcuts and end up regretting it. How often have we said
to our doctor, our accountant, or our clergyman, “Do I really have to go to all this trouble? Isn’t there an easier
way to accomplish this?” And the answer has been virtually the same one as the child gave the traveler:
“Yes, there are shortcuts but they will end up being longer, harder, and more expensive in the end.”
(Taken from “The Lord is my Shepherd; Healing Wisdom of the 23rd Psalm”, by Rabbi Harold Kushner.)
While the people, the leader and the focus make each small group unique, the goal is always the same:
helping one another grow in our ability to love God and each other better.
Why not begin looking for a small group this week?
